Picking Autonomous Mobile Robots

What are Picking Autonomous Mobile Robots

Picking Picking Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), are one of the most developed categories of robotic technology for warehouse automation. There are two basic types of picking AMRs, Goods to Person and Person to Goods.

In a Person to Goods system, a warehouse picking associate walks to locations to retrieve the items to be pick and places them on the robot. Notable vendors that offer this type of solution include 6 River Systems, Locus, Zebra/Fetch and Rapyuta.

In a Goods to Person system, the robot brings the inventory to the picker and the picker stands in the same position. Kiva Systems pioneered an autonomous mobile robot that picked up shelves and brought them to the picker.

Kiva Systems pioneered an autonomous mobile robot that picked up shelves and brought them to the picker. Kiva was purchased by Amazon in 2012. Companies that have brought similar solutions to the Kiva system to market include Geek+, GreyOrange, etc.

Two notable companies have had some success in automatically picking items robotically in the aisle and bringing them to a takeoff area. These are Pittsburgh based IAM robotics and Munich based Magazino. Such applications are very difficult and have limitations. IAM’s approach is to prepare the items for picking in advance. Magazino restricts its application to cuboidal shaped items such as shoe boxes.
